July’s Book To Live By

Aromatherapy is about far more than aromas.

In the July membership, we looked at this age-old approach to health, healing and so much more.

I interviewed three essential oil experts from our Women on Fire community: aromatherapist Dana Frost; Jodi Graber, a certified holistic health counselor; and Stephanie Dalfonzo, an author, speaker and coach.

They inspired us with ideas on chemical-free treatments for a variety of conditions, including anxiety, insomnia and grief, as well as for everyday household needs.

To continue this exploration, I’m pleased to recommend for the July Book To Live By:

The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood

The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood

Worwood is one of the foremost authorities on essential oils. She runs a clinic in England, lectures around the world on her research, and has written more than a dozen books.

The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy, published in 1991 and revised and expanded in 2016, is her most extensive effort. It is the quintessential reference for using essential oils for health and wellness, home and garden, work environments, beauty routines and more.

Worwood starts by suggesting a basic kit of 10 oils, which will take you a long way in creating your own mixtures from the 800 detailed recipes in the newer edition. They are easy to follow, even for a beginner.

The book is well organized, and Worwood keeps the flow of information simple and practical. It’s chock-full of longstanding remedies presented clearly and without hype or brand promotion.

The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy would make a great addition to your health-care bookshelf.

To your health and happiness,

June’s Book To Live By

At 56, Sheri Salata awoke from a dream-come-true career to discover that the rest of her life was not at all what she’d dreamed it would be.

After two decades working at the highest levels with TV icon Oprah Winfrey, Sheri realized she’d been neglecting her own needs and desires. Her health, relationships and personal aspirations had been pushed aside.

She began a journey of transformation.

In June, for the second time, Sheri was my guest for the membership interview. It was my pleasure to bring her back to Women on Fire to discuss the newest chapter of her life.

Now, to augment our amazing conversation, it is my honor to recommend Sheri’s brand-new memoir for the June Book To Live By:

The Beautiful No: And Other Tales of Trial, Transcendence, and Transformation by Sheri Salata

The Beautiful No: And Other Tales of Trial, Transcendence, and Transformation by Sheri Salata

The meaning of “the beautiful no” is that beneath every “no” you’ve received, you can find that it led to something better or something special. If you can recognize that at the moment of rejection and hang on for the beauty, you can gain peace of mind and acceptance.

To illustrate this and other profound lessons she has learned, Sheri shares her life story — from the glamorous, thrilling highs to the heartbreaking and self-shaming lows. She meets us with a vulnerability and candor that is relatable and heartening.

For those looking to reconcile with their past and begin anew, The Beautiful No offers inspiration and guidance for getting out of a rut and living with hope.

This is my favorite book of the year so far. I soaked up every word! (And Sheri even mentions Women on Fire. See page 156!)

To get your transformation started, Sheri is offering a free chapter and workbook plus bonus resources at www.thebeautifulno.com.

To your transcendence,

May’s Book To Live By

“She lives on beneath everything I do. Her presence influenced who I was and her absence influences who I am.” —Hope Edelman, Motherless Daughters

The loss of one’s mother leaves a void and longing that lasts a lifetime.

My guest for this month’s interview, Cara Belvin, was 9 years old when her mother died at age 37. After decades of silent grieving, Cara embraced her pain and used it to help others.

She founded empowerHER, an organization that supports girls who have also experienced the early loss of their mothers.

To complement my powerful conversation with Cara, for the May Book To Live By, I recommend:

Letters from Motherless Daughters: Words of Courage, Grief, and Healing by Hope Edelman

Letters from Motherless Daughters: Words of Courage, Grief, and Healing

This book is a follow-up to the New York Times bestseller Motherless Daughters, in which Hope Edelman wrote about her own loss and healing. Her journey included extensive research and interviews with other motherless women.

Her stunning exploration prompted letters from hundreds of women of all ages sharing their stories of mother loss. Dozens of the letters are compiled in this book, chronicling the pain, hope and hard-won insights from this universal shared sorrow.

The book is divided into stages of grief, beginning with young women suffering recent losses and covering heartache and lessons that emerge over a lifetime. The letters bring wisdom and relief to those who feel alone in their anguish.

As we celebrate our mothers this week, let us also remember the motherless daughters. Letters from Motherless Daughters may be just the gift idea you are looking for.

April’s Book To Live By

Love is a choice, Dr. Gary Chapman tells us.

But he doesn’t leave us there. He teaches us what that means and how to choose love.

Dr. Chapman is an author, speaker, marriage counselor and pastor. I have long admired his work, and I had the great pleasure to interview him this month for the Women on Fire membership.

Now, for the April Book To Live By, it is my honor to recommend his classic tour de force:

The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts by Dr. Gary Chapman

The 5 Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman

Originally published in 1992, this book remains a perennial best-seller. It has sold tens of millions of copies and been translated into 50 languages.

The heart of the book describes the five universal ways people give and receive love: affirming words, gift-giving, physical touch, quality time and acts of service. These five languages offer endless “dialects” for expressing affection.

This timeless concept is a gentle reminder that everyone experiences the world in different ways. It is our choice to learn how to express love to those closest to us in ways they will feel and understand most deeply.

The approach is simple yet powerful. It is practical yet profound. The ideas are relevant no matter your age, where you live and work, or your romantic status. They can apply to any relationship.

Coupled with the quiz, which you can take for free online (www.5lovelanguages.com/quizzes), the information in this book offers valuable insights into how to better connect with those close to you. And by pinpointing your own love language, you can better understand yourself and your needs.

This book has been a game-changer for countless couples and individuals. I know The 5 Love Languages can do the same for you.

With love,

Debbie Signature

March’s Book To Live By

Hardly a month goes by that you don’t see an article on the mental health crisis of anxiety in our society.

Reports reflect on the epidemic levels of stress and depression affecting all ages, income levels and walks of life.

As a coach for more than 20 years, I have often seen how debilitating panic attacks and stress-related problems prevent people from fully living their lives.

There is one book I super excited about that offers easy and quick solutions for those awful moments when you or a loved one suffers from anxiety. And it is my pleasure to announce that it is our March Book To Live By:

Goodbye Anxiety, Hello Freedom: How to Build Resilience and Overcome Anxiety by Stephanie Dalfonzo

Goodbye Anxiety, Hello Freedom by Stephanie Dalfonzo

The topic is so critical and the book so valuable that this is the second time we are recommending it.

The author is a dear Women on Fire sister who generously comes to the aid of other members to answer their questions on anxiety and offer her strategies for relief and comfort.

The book is easy to read and follow. It offers dozens of tools and tips that can be used anytime and anyplace.

I am so proud of Stephanie for conquering her own anxiety and then sharing her hard-won wisdom and years of experience with all of us.

Be sure to check out the links in Goodbye Anxiety to download bonus mini-meditations to help you press the “re-set button” when needed throughout your day!

February’s Book To Live By

Risk can appear in many forms — personal, professional, financial, physical.

Sure, such challenges can carry gains. But they could also mean loss. Perhaps even danger. When is a risk worth taking?

My guest for the February interview put that question to the test in a big way.

Author Irene O’Garden is one of the true inspirations in my life. Her play, Women on Fire, was a spark for one of my greatest adventures!

For our February Book To Live By, I am thrilled to recommend Irene’s stunning memoir:

Risking the Rapids: How My Wilderness Adventure Healed My Childhood by Irene O’Garden

Risking the Rapids by Irene O'Garden

Irene grew up in a large Catholic family during the mid-20th century. A well-known but alcoholic father, a cold, often cruel mother, and seven battling children are the stuff of dysfunction. Each of the siblings carried deep and lasting scars.

The book opens with the death of a brother. The family gathers in shock and grief, and plans are made for a weeklong rafting trip to aid in their healing. Irene sees the risk of discomfort outweighed by the potential for closing old wounds.

As the adventure in remote wilderness unravels into a harrowing trek, Irene intermixes scenes from her childhood. The divergent tales grow at a heart-thumping pace.

Irene’s gorgeous language, riveting details, and keen insights will grip you from the first page and sweep you along to the last.

Prepare for a wild ride! You will love Risking the Rapids.

January’s Book To Live By

Each new year calls us to a fresh start.

Many of us will resolve to change our habits and attitude, hoping to improve our life circumstances.

But what if, instead of working from the inside out, we began with our surroundings? I highly recommend this approach!

The guest for our January membership interview is Karen Rauch Carter. This Women on Fire favorite is an expert in feng shui, the traditional Chinese philosophy of organizing your home to support your goals and dreams.

To build on that inspiring interview conversation, our January Book To Live By is:

Make a Shift, Change Your Life: Simple Solutions to Transform Your Life from Drab to Fab Now! by Karen Rauch Carter

Make a Shift Change Your Life by Karen Rauch Carter

This wise, upbeat book complements Karen’s best-selling Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life, which is a classic in the field.

Karen shows us that everything is energy, and the closer something is to you the more powerful its impact. You learn that by decluttering your environment you declutter your mind.

This self-guided workshop is filled with easy-to-follow tips and techniques and clear examples of “course corrections” to get you back on the path you intended for your life.

I guarantee you will have fun reading this book and following Karen’s straightforward advice.

I have worked with Karen and experienced the positive, energetic changes her strategies bring. They really work! I hope you will enjoy her book.

Wishing you a happy and prosperous 2019,

Debbie Signature

November’s Book To Live By

To start the holiday season, you will find something very special from Women on Fire in your mailbox this month!

We’ve created our own Appreciation Pad as a gift — and a powerful practice — for you.

Appreciation has magical powers to transform your life. I see it at work every day.

And to help you discover the magic in your new pad, for our November Book To Live By, it is my pleasure to recommend:

The Power of Appreciation: The Key to a Vibrant Life by Dr. Noelle C. Nelson, Ph.D., and Jeannine Lemare Calaba, Psy.D.

The Power of Appreciation: The Key to a Vibrant Life by Dr. Noelle C. Nelson, Ph.D., and Jeannine Lemare Calaba, Psy.D.

Nelson and Calaba begin by clarifying the distinction between appreciation and gratitude.

Actually, gratitude makes up part of the power of appreciation. It is the receptive half, the force that engages your heart.

But appreciation also adds the dynamic energy of valuing. You recognize why something — or someone — matters to you. Valuing engages the mind.

With appreciation, you don’t wait for a gift or for the good times to roll. You choose what has worth to you and direct your focus on it with gratitude.

As you lovingly notice those values and valuables in your life, they expand. The richness of your life unfolds.

The authors use scientific research, along with the wisdom of the ages, to show you the whys and hows of harnessing appreciation to attain fulfillment in your life.

Through their straightforward five-step plan, you will uncover a new perspective that shifts your thought patterns to transform your life patterns. You will weed out negative beliefs and unleash the good vibrations of consistent, proactive appreciation.

The Power of Appreciation is available from Amazon. And, of course, you have the opportunity to be one of four members to “win” a copy of this book on the next Women on Fire Live Chat master class on Tuesday, November 13.

I appreciate you and wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Love,

Debbie Signature
