July’s Book To Live By

Francesca Gino is leading a rebellion.

This behavioral scientist and Harvard Business School professor is advocating a revolution to bring more joy and purpose into our lives.

Doesn’t that sound like a movement you’d join?

If so, I know you’ll love our July Book To Live By:

Rebel Talent: Why It Pays to Break the Rules at Work and in Life by Francesca Gino.

Rebel Talent

When Francesca writes about rebels, she means those innovators who dare to think outside the box to spark creativity. The rule-breakers she introduces us to are seekers of authenticity and diversity. Her revolutionaries follow their curiosity and originality to solve problems and generate positive change.

Francesca spent more than a decade studying organizations around the world to discover the secrets behind high achievement and innovation. From her research, she identifies leaders who found great success by embracing the “rebel talent” in themselves and others. The examples she presents take us to such spectacular settings as the best restaurant in the world and an award-winning computer animation studio.

Francesca believes we all have a little rebel inside us. By nurturing those instincts, we can become more engaged in life and find more success.

Rebel Talent will show you how to prosper by breaking rules and, in the process, change the world for the better.

Challenge yourself to find your own rebel talent. I promise you’ll enjoy the ride!

Rebel Talent: Why It Pays to Break the Rules at Work and in Life is available from Amazon and bookstores everywhere.

June’s Book To Live By

Conflict is part of life. No one can escape it.

But if you find yourself trying to avoid it, you are not alone. Most people find conflict to be the most uncomfortable conversations.

For the June membership interview, I spoke with master-certified coach Rob Berkley on how to transform conflict for better, deeper relationships.

Rob is also my husband and business partner and the person I’ve had — and resolved — more conflict with than anyone. I’ve learned so much from him.

I am so pleased to announce Rob’s favorite book on conflict resolution as the June Book To Live By:
Resolve: Negotiating Life’s Conflicts with Greater Confidence by Hal Movius

In Resolve, Movius draws on his experience and insights from a career as a mediator, negotiation trainer and corporate executive coach.

Rob said one of the main reasons he recommended this book is because “it’s filled with practical advice that will give you confidence in many of the toughest negotiations you may encounter personally and professionally.”

Indeed, Movius identifies confidence as the major factor for having healthy, productive conflict.

He breaks confidence down into three key components — mastery, awareness and poise — to guide you through the process of turning conflict into negotiation.

The tools and strategies will put even the most timid person at ease. You’ll learn how to spot common pitfalls and errors in judgment.

Movius makes liberal use of lists and charts for easy comprehension. And a handy appendix summarizes the techniques for quick review.

With a little practice, you’ll soon find yourself stepping unafraid into the world of conflict resolution.

Here’s to better conflict!
